After a trying week of postponements, light and shifty breeze the ISAF Youth World Championship in Istanbul TUR concluded with a spectacular summer day with warm sunshine and a gusty offshore breeze from 8 - 14 knots. In the Laser Radial girls division, sailors have been jumping on and off the podium throughout the championship with a new leader nearly every day. Michelle Broekhuizen NED won the first medal for the Netherlands at these championships. She edged Heidi Tenkanen FIN, who won the last race that rounded out a strong second half of the week for her. After a slow start, Erika Reineke USA claimed bronze.
In the Laser Radial boys Thomas Saunders NED got the first gold for the Kiwis, sailing a steady race in the puffy conditions. "There was a good breeze today, it's my last regatta in the Radial, I was going to Scotland for the Radial Worlds but I'm glad I came here." Keerati Bualong THA finished the week on a high note to claim silver for the Asian region.
