In atypical cold conditions with temperatures around 10°C, the ISAF-Grade-1 Midwinters in Florida began yesterday. All three fleets could sail three races each in medium winds between 8 and 12 kn. The Laser Standard class (96 boats) has been split in two fleets. After the first day of the Laser Midwinters, the favorites are heading the leader boards. Nick Thompson (GBR), winner of the Miami Worldcup Regatta, tops the Laser Standards 1 point ahead of fellow Brit Olympic Champion Paul Goodison and 2 ahead of Rasmus Myrgren (SWE) in third. Clayton Johnson (USA), rank 31 with a 4/1/BFD score is definitely another contender for a top place. On the 15th place, John Bertrand (USA/Master), World Champion in the 70s, is doing extremely well in this top athletic Laser fleet.
Paige Railey USA sailing in her home waters is already on the first place of the Laser Radial fleet (93 boats), followed by Sari Multala FIN and Mitchell Kiss USA (first boy). Nathalie Brugger SUI, another potential top-rank sailor, is still back on the 40th place after a BFD.
In the small Laser 4.7 fleet (15 boats), Juanky Perdomo PUR is on place 1.
